چکیده

The original mathematical model of microbial growth in the Chemostat is modified to describe continuous cultures in which the limiting nutrient is supplied at a rate independent of the dilution rate. The application of this model to continuous Chlorella cultures in which CO(2) is the factor limiting growth is discussed. The conclusions from the model are: (i) at a constant rate of CO(2) supply, the equilibrium population density is directly proportional to the retention time; and (ii) the production rate is directly proportional to the rate of CO(2) supply. Experimental data are presented to verify the theoretical conclusions.

Microalgal biomass production and on-site bioremediation of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide from flue gas using Chlorella sp. cultures.

The growth and on-site bioremediation potential of an isolated thermal- and CO₂-tolerant mutant strain, Chlorella sp. MTF-7, were investigated. The Chlorella sp. MTF-7 cultures were directly aerated with the flue gas generated from coke oven of a steel plant. The biomass concentration, growth rate and lipid content of Chlorella sp. MTF-7 cultured in an outdoor 50-L photobioreactor for 6 days wa...

Estimation of Chlorella vulgaris growth rate in a continuous photobioreactor

Microalgae consume carbon dioxide for their growth and to produce secondary metabolites. One of the control system challenges is to maximize this carbon dioxide consumption by controlling microalgae growth, and by maintaining its growth rate at an optimal value. However, there is no such thing as a microalgae growth rate sensor. This paper proposes a software sensor for the specific growth rate...

Growth modeling of the green microalga Chlorella vulgaris in an air-lift photobioreactor

Considering the increasing impact of the environmental concerns in the current worldwide policy, the application of biological processes, namely the bio-fixation of CO2 by microalgae, represents a promising solution and an increasingly attractive strategy. Indeed, these photosynthetic microorganisms have the great capacity to fix and tolerate high CO2 concentrations converting it to biomass and...

Adaptation of the Cyanobacterium fischerella sp. ISC 107 to the combined effects of pH and carbon dioxide concentration. Mahboobeh Rajabnasab1, Ramezan Ali Khavari-nejad1*, Shademan Shokravi2 and Taher Nejadsattari1

The aim of this study was to investigate the adaptation of the cyanobacterium Fischerella sp. ISC 107to combined effects of carbon dioxide concentration, acidic and alkalinity. Axenic strain was incubated in BG0-11 medium. Carbon dioxide treatments were limited and relatively non-limited. Acidic (pH 5), neutral (pH7), and alkaline (pH 9) conditions were employed in each treatment. Survival, gro...

Effect of Selenate on Viability and Selenomethionine Accumulation of Chlorella sorokiniana Grown in Batch Culture

The aim of this work was to study the effect of Se(+VI) on viability, cell morphology, and selenomethionine accumulation of the green alga Chlorella sorokiniana grown in batch cultures. Culture exposed to sublethal Se concentrations of 40 mg · L(-1) (212 μM) decreased growth rates for about 25% compared to control. A selenate EC50 value of 45 mg · L(-1) (238.2 μM) was determined. Results showed...
